This is a thumb tip size hand painted silk hankerchief. Paratroupers had maps of the area they were landing in painted on their parachutes. Once they had landed they would cut them out. It did not matter if they got wet and they did not rustle. My grandfather taught me how he used to conceal the map in his hand so no one else could see it. This is where you employ your best thumb tip methods. If you are wearing a jacket, it is easy to make the compass appear from under the hankerchief for a nice climax to the routine.
